Train travel within Albania’s borders is very limited. When you travel through Albania, you might see some of the old railway tracks. However, many of these old railway tracks are currently not in use.

The Albanian railway system was constructed by the former communist regime, which ruled the country between the end of the Second World War and 1992. Since 1992, there has been little to no investment in railway tracks, therefore, many railways are not in use.

As little as 2-4 trains operate in the entire country in any given week. Albanian Railways sometimes operates a train between Elbasan and Durres, but only 1-2 times per week. And sometimes a train is in operation between Shkoder and Lac, but only 1 time per week.

Albania does not have international passenger trains. Because the former communist regime, who constructed the railway tracks did isolate Albania from the rest of the world. So at that time, there was no use or interest in international passenger trains.
