It costs 40 – 66 euros per day to rent a car in Podgorica and drive it across the border to Albania. Furthermore, you would need around 50 euros for petrol to drive from Podgorica to Tirana.

I requested prices from several car rental companies in Podgorica to ask what it would cost to rent a car for 14 days and drive it across the border to Albania.

Renault Rent a Car in Montenegro offered a Renault Clio 5 for 560 euros from the 1st of July for 14 days. Therefore, renting a Renault Clio 5 costs 40 euros per day. Plus a deposit of 200 euros.

Europcar Montenegro offered a Fiat 500L Manual transmission for 925.46 euros from the 1st of July for 14 days. Therefore, renting a Fiat 500L costs roughly 66 euros per day. Plus a deposit of 524.54 euros.

Renting a car in Podgorica and driving it to Tirana, is more expensive than renting a car in Albania. I have recently reached out to many car rental companies in Tirana and a car rental in Tirana starts at 20-25 euros per day.

It is more expensive to rent in Podgorica and drive the car across the border because you pay for a Green Card Insurance Certificate or Cross Border Fee.

“We will charge you 20 euros for the green card.” by Renault Rent a Car Montenegro
Interestingly, Europcar quoted the cross the border fee on a daily basis. So check how long your journey will be and figure out what is the most affordable option.

“You can go to Albania with our vehicles, cross border fee is charged 6€ per day, max 60€ for the entire rental period.” by Europcar Montenegro

I would highly recommend reaching out to car rental companies in Podgorica before you travel. Because prices and deposits do vary significantly.

Renault Rent a Car in Montenegro wrote: “Deposit is 200€ and you can give it by card or by cash. Deposit is additional on price but when you return vehicle we return you your deposit back if everything is all right.”

Europcar Montenegro, for instance, informed me that they needed to block 1450 euros on my credit card for the car rental. The quote they sent me for a Fiat 500L Manual transmission was for 925.46 euros, so that makes the deposit 524.54 euros.

You cannot take a train from Podgorica to Tirana. Although there is a railway from Podgorica to Shkoder, this railway is for freight traffic only. There are only goods transports on the railway between Podgorica and Shkoder.

There are no International passenger trains into Albania at all. This is due to the fact that the Albanian rail network was constructed during the communist period. Therefore, the rail network was only constructed inside Albania, with no rails across the border.

The only international railway that Albania has is between Podgorica and Shkoder, which is only for goods transport. There are no passenger trains on this network.
