– Taxi Dauti charges 90 euros for a one-way journey from Ohrid to Tirana

How much does it cost to get from Lake Ohrid to Tirana by rental car?

It costs 30-45 euros per day to rent a car in Lake Ohrid and drive it to Tirana.

To give you a good indication of the rental prices, I have contacted several car rental companies in Lake Ohrid. I asked each of the car rental companies, how much it would cost to rent a car in Lake Ohrid and drive it across the border to Tirana. To keep the price comparison fair, I requested a 1-week rental car from the 1st of May from each company.

Car rental costs Lake Ohrid to Tirana

  • Rent a Car Escape Ohrid charges 199 euros for a Chevrolet Spark for 1 week. That is roughly 28.45 euros per day.
  • Pegasus Rent a Car in Ohrid charges 210 euros for a Chevrolet Spark for 1 week, including green card and insurance. That is 30 euros per day.
  • Interways Ohrid Rent a Car charges 290 euros for 1 week including border-crossing fees. That is 41.50 euros per day.
  • Hertz Ohrid charges 304 euros for a Citroen C3 for 1 week, including a green card. That is 43.45 euros per day.
  • Pegasus Rent a Car in Ohrid charges 315 euros for an Opel Astra sedan automatic for 1 week, including green card and insurance. That is 45 euros per day.

To be honest, renting a car in Lake Ohrid and driving it to Tirana is more expensive than simply renting within Albania. I did a price comparison between car rental companies in Tirana earlier, and prices start from 20-25 euros per day in Tirana.

However, you must bear in mind that driving a rental car across the border always costs extra. Because the car rental company must prepare a Green Card Insurance certificate. The Green Card insurance certificate proves that the car from Macedonia is also covered with basic insurance whilst driving in Albania.

It is important to have this Green Card Insurance certificate for border inspection. Moreover, a car with foreign number plates is more likely to be stopped in Albania by traffic police.

Is there a train from Lake Ohrid to Tirana?

You cannot get from Lake Ohrid to Tirana by train, because there is no rail network between Lake Ohrid and Tirana.

There are no international trains from any other country in Europe to Albania, because Albania does not have rails across the border. The only rail that crosses the border is between Montenegro and Albania, but this rail is only used for goods transport, so no passenger trains.

The rail network inside Albania was constructed by the former communist dictator Enver Hoxha. During the communist regime, Albania was isolated from the rest of the world. Similar to North Korea today.

After the fall of communism in 1992, there has been little maintenance, refurbishment or investment in the rail network.

Therefore, only a handful of very slow and old trains are operational in Albania today. However, none of these trains cross the borders of Albania.
