You can get from Saranda to Berat by bus. The bus from Saranda to Berat departs at 8:00 AM and 14:30. A bus ticket costs 1400 Leke (approximately 14 euros) per person. The bus departs from Trans Dea in the city centre of Saranda. 

You won’t find an official bus terminal. What you will find instead is that buses departing from Saranda stop alongside the street in the city centre. So you must walk to the Trans Dea bus agency. At Trans Dea, you will find a cafe displaying bus timetables to other cities. The bus from Saranda to Berat will stop alongside the street in front of the cafe. 

You are expected to pay cash for your bus ticket with the bus driver. So bring some Albanian Leke cash or some Euros cash with you to pay the bus driver. You cannot book your bus ticket in advance online, as the bus drivers do not have a booking website or online booking system. The only way to buy a ticket is cash in hand, first come first serve with the bus driver.

  • Centrum Rent a Car Saranda charges 25 euros per day for a Suzuki Swift, Chevrolet Spark or Volkswagen Polo. 
  • Brilant Car Rental Sarande charges 20 euros per day for a Toyota Yaris.
  • Saranda Center Scooter and Car Rental charges 200 euros per week, so approximately 28.50 euros per day, for a Toyota Yaris 1.4 Diesel.
  • Iri’s Car Rental charges 20 euros per day for a Nissan Note.

Of course, if you are travelling to Albania in July or August, car rental rates may be higher, because that is in the middle of the high-season. You may find that in July and August, the cheapest rental cars are no longer available and therefore you may only be offered more expensive and luxurious models.

I highly recommend you reach out to some car rental companies before you travel. You may use WhatsApp for instance to get some price quotes. Although international branded car rentals like Hertz and Avis are present in some cities in Albania, the local rental car companies usually offer a more affordable deal.

You cannot get from Saranda to Berat by train. Saranda does not have a train station and there are no railways in Saranda. Berat does not have a train station and there are no railways in Berat.

In the past, there were trains in Albania connecting Shkoder, Tirana, Durres, Elbasan, Vlore and Pogradec. Although most of the old railway tracks are visible in the landscape, a lot of old railways are currently not in use. 

As of 2024, there are 2-3 trains per week between Durres and Elbasan. And there is 1 x train per week between Shkoder and Lac. The other railways are not in use. Although there are plans to refurbish the railway between Durres, Tirana Airport and Tirana. There are currently no trains on this route and no trains to the capital city Tirana at all.

How long does it take to get from Saranda to Berat?

It takes approximately 4 hours to get from Saranda to Berat. If you are driving independently, it is best to drive from Saranda via Tepelene to Fier and then from Fier to Berat. Although Google Maps may show you that there is a route to get to Berat to the South. This road is old and in a bad condition. So the best route is Saranda -> Tepelene -> Fier -> Berat.
