Vlore to Tirana bus ticket price

A bus ticket from Vlore to Tirana costs 600 Leke (approximately 6 euros) per person. You can only pay for your bus ticket in cash to the bus driver, when the bus arrives. Therefore, I always recommend you carry some cash euros and a small amount of Albanian Lek in cash with you whilst travelling in Albania.

In foreign countries, it may be normal to pay the majority of transactions by card. However, in Albania, it is normal to pay most of your transactions by cash. So I recommend you do as the locals do and carry some cash with you whilst travelling in Albania. Of course, you can do currency exchange or use ATMs in the city centres.

Can I book the bus from Vlore to Tirana online?

You cannot book your bus ticket from Vlore to Tirana online. You can only pay for your bus ticket in cash to the bus driver. This means the way to get a seat on the bus is getting to the bus station early and asking around in person.

The vast majority of national buses within Albania’s borders do not have a website. These bus drivers do not have a website or online booking system, so booking online is simply not possible. These bus drivers only pick up in person and collect cash in person for their bus ride. It is perhaps a bit old-fashioned, but that is the norm in Albania.

Where to get on the bus from Vlore to Tirana?

The buses from Vlore to Tirana depart from the “Bus Terminal Vlore”. Basically, the Bus Terminal Vlore is a location next to the street in Rruga Demokracia (Democracy Street) in Vlore, where buses to other cities in Albania stop alongside the road.

Don’t expect a bus station with parking, rather you will see small buses stop alongside the road. You will also see a signage saying “Interbuz Vlora Bus Station”, that will show you the bus timetables.

If you have questions, you can ask bus drivers who stop alongside the road. Usually bus drivers will give you more accurate information.

You can see the location of the “Bus Terminal Vlore” on Google Maps here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/FyX9dvKbV74itjzA7

Tirana Bus Terminal

The bus from Vlore to Tirana will drop off passengers at the Tirana North and South Bus Terminal. The Tirana North and South Bus Terminal is located outside the city centre of Tirana in the Kamez neighbourhood.

So once you are dropped off at the Tirana North and South Bus Terminal, you will need to take a city bus or a taxi to the city centre. The city centre of Tirana is at Skanderbeg Square. Skanderbeg Square is the central square in the middle of the city.

If you prefer to take a city bus instead of a taxi, here is what to do. From the Tirana North and South Bus Terminal walk to the exit of the terminal. You must cross the busy road to the other side. You will see “Hotel Terminal” and a petrol station in front of that hotel. This is where you will find a bus stop for the city bus. Take the bus towards “Qender”, which means “city centre” in the Albanian language.

How long does it take to get from Vlore to Tirana?

It takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes to travel from Vlore to Tirana by bus, by taxi or by car. There are no operational trains on this route.

How much is a taxi from Vlore to Tirana?

A taxi from Vlore to Tirana will cost you between 110 euros and 123 euros. Of course, these are rough price indications. You would still need to reach out to individual taxi drivers and ask for their rate for a taxi from Vlore to Tirana.

That being said, these prices are based on what big taxi companies like Tirana Airport Taxi Service and Merr Taxi charge for a taxi. These companies publish their set price lists online.

How much does it cost to rent a car and drive from Vlore to Tirana?

It costs at least 20-25 euros per day to rent a car in Albania for the most basic rental car. That being said, you will pay much more in July and August for a rental car, due to the tourist high season. Most likely in July and August, basic rental cars will not be available anymore or priced higher.

There is a helpful list of car rental companies on the website of Tirana Airport. You can find mobile numbers and email addresses for all the car rental companies at Tirana Airport.

To give you an insight into what it would cost to rent a basic rental car, I did reach out to several car rental companies at Tirana Airport.

Tirana Airport car rental prices (starting from):

  • Albania Airport Rent a Car charges 20 euros per day for a manual Skoda Fabia from 2018.
  • Avis Rent a Car Tirana Airport charges 20 euros per day for a manual Opel Corsa or 25 euros per day for an automatic Opel Corsa.
  • Pepa Rent a Car Tirana Airport charges 20 euros per day for an economy car, like a Skoda.
  • RCA Rent a Car in Albania Tirana Airport charges 15 euros per day for a small manual car, like a Mitsubishi Spacestar or Citroen C1 or Peugeot 108.
  • Green Motion Rent Car Tirana Airport charges 15 euros per day for the economy category. It can be an Opel Corsa or Dacia Sandero or Skoda Fabia.
  • Viaggia Rent Tirana Airport charges 18 euros per day for a manual Fiat Panda from 2023.
  • ARA Auto Rental Tirana Airport charges 17 euros per day for a small manual car or 20 euros per day for an automatic car. Brands like Citroen or Peugeot are available.
  • G Rentals Tirana Airport charges 20 euros per day for a Dacia Stepway.
  • Sixt Car Rental Tirana Airport charges 15 euros per day for a Mitsubishi Space Star.

Of course, it is important to bear in mind that car rental rates can be a lot higher in the tourist high season. The summer months like July and August are the top of the high season, so car rental can be a lot pricier. Especially, since the basic or cheap rental car may not be available anymore and only a more luxurious and expensive car is available.

Do reach out to several car rental companies before you travel. I have spoken to tourists who paid 50-70 euros a day for a rental car. So it is best to do your research before you travel.

IMPORTANT! Driving in Albania can be challenging for a foreigner. The Albanian drivers do have a chaotic and sometimes aggressive style of driving. So if you have any doubts about driving, do not do it! Hire a taxi, book a tour or travel by bus instead. Safety comes first.

Moreover, car rental companies in Albania are usually small independent operators. Which means that the car rental agency expects you to return the car rental in the same city. So car rental would only be an option if you are planning to make a round trip by car. A one-way trip may not be possible, as car rental drop-off in a different city may not be available or could be expensive.

You cannot take a train from Vlore to Tirana. There are old railway tracks from Vlore to Tirana and in the past there used to be trains between Vlore and Tirana. However, these old railway tracks between Vlore and Tirana are not in use and in need of refurbishment.

In the communist period, from the end of the Second World War until 1992, trains and railways were made in Albania for the first time. At that time there were trains connecting Shkoder, Tirana, Durres, Elbasan, Pogradec and Vlore.

Today, many of these old railways are visible in the landscape but not in use, as they need to be refurbished. In 2024, there are 2-3 trains per week between Durres and Elbasan. And there are 1-2 trains per week between Shkoder and Lac. That is very little, therefore, locals usually take a minibus if they travel by public transport.

In 2024, a new railway is being constructed connecting Durres, Tirana Airport and Tirana. It is possible that in 2025, there may be trains on this new route. But currently, construction works are still on the way and not finished yet.
