This bus terminal is located outside the city centre of Tirana. So if you are staying in a hotel near Skanderbeg Square in the city centre of Tirana, you can take a city bus or short taxi ride to get to the Tirana Bus Terminal North and South Albania. 

The city bus from the centre of Tirana to the Tirana Bus Terminal North and South Albania departs from a bus stop at the back of the National History Museum on Skanderbeg Square. The bus stop is located in Rruga Ded Gjo Luli. Get on a bus with the destination “Instituti”, this bus makes a stop at the Tirana Bus Terminal North and South Albania.

The drivers from these 4 wheel drive taxis know the terrain very well. The road to Theth was asphalted in 2023, however, it is a single lane road for traffic from both directions. So cars must get off the road on the top of a cliff to let other traffic pass. Local drivers know how to maneuver the road to Theth. 

Moreover, 4 wheel drive taxi drivers often stay the night in Theth to bring passengers back to Shkoder the next day. Particularly, because it is not safe to drive on the mountain road at night. This is something that regular city taxis do not offer. 

To get to Theth by taxi, you have two options. Firstly, you can hire a 4 wheel drive taxi from Tirana to Theth. Or you can take a regular city taxi from Tirana to Shkoder and then a 4 wheel drive taxi from Shkoder to Theth.

Because there is only one-lane, drivers often need to get off the road at the top of a cliff to let other drivers pass. Which can be quite scary, because it is so high in the mountains and there is little space alongside the road. That is why I recommend hiring a local driver for safety reasons.

It takes around 4-5 hours to get from Tirana to Theth. From Tirana, you must first take a bus, a car or a taxi to get to Shkoder, this will take you around 2-3 hours depending on how much traffic there is on the road. Then from Shkoder, it takes another 2 hours to get to Theth. 

Overall, your trip will end up taking 4 hours if traffic is light or perhaps 5 hours if there is a lot of traffic on the road in the summer season. 

When is the best time to travel from Tirana to Theth?

The best time to travel from Tirana to Theth would be between June and September. Because it is nice sunny weather. Although it is a bit cooler in Theth than in the South of Albania, Theth still offers nice mild weather in the summer months. 

Attention, the road to Theth can be blocked by snow between December and May. So if you are travelling to Albania in the winter or spring season, you may not be able to go to Theth if the road is still blocked by snow. 

Snow is unpredictable, so it is impossible to say when the road to Theth will be open in the spring in advance. You will only be able to check a few days before you travel with the local people. 

Snow on the road to Theth can be 1 or 1.5 meter high, so please listen to the advice of local people in Shkoder before travelling to Theth.

Is Theth worth visiting?

Theth is worth visiting if you enjoy hiking, nature and mountains. In order to enjoy Theth, you must be fit to hike. Because the main sights, like the Blue Eye of Theth and the Grunas Waterfall can only be reached on foot. 

Of course, you can hire a 4 wheel drive taxi in Shkoder or in Theth to bring you to the trailhead for the Blue Eye of Theth or the Grunas Waterfall. However, it does take 1 hour to hike from the trailhead to the Blue Eye of Theth. It takes 30 minutes to hike from the trailhead to the Grunas Waterfall. 

Theth is surrounded by high mountains and offers stunning panoramic views all around. You can see the local life in Theth, little farmhouses and guest houses are all around. Get to know a bit about the local culture and heritage by visiting the Lock-in Tower in the Theth village. 

The beauty of being in Theth is that it is so far from your stressful and busy life. And you are all of a sudden surrounded by nature and mountains. 

How to get from Tirana to the Blue Eye of Theth?

You can get from Tirana to the Blue Eye of Theth by hiring a 4 wheel drive taxi or by taking the local bus. 

  • Option 1: Hire a 4 wheel drive taxi from Tirana to Theth (180 euros) and ask the taxi driver to drop you off at the trailhead for the Blue Eye of Theth
  • Option 2: Take a city taxi to Shkoder (50-70 euros) + 4 wheel drive taxi from Shkoder to Theth (90 euros) and ask the taxi driver to drop you off at the trailhead for the Blue Eye of Theth
  • Option 3: Local bus from Tirana to Shkoder (5 euros)  + Bus from Shkoder to Theth (12 euros) + Hike along the road to the trailhead (3 hours) + hike to the blue eye (1 hour)

The Blue Eye of Theth is a 4 hour hike one-way from the Theth village, if you do not hire a 4 wheel drive car. You would essentially be walking along the road for 3 hours to get to the trailhead and then an additional 1 hour on the mountain trail to the Blue Eye spring. And bear in mind that it would be another 4 hours back to the Theth village. 

You can hire a 4 wheel drive taxi from Tirana or Shkoder or Theth to bring you to the trailhead and then you would only need to hike 1 hour to the Blue Eye spring and 1 hour back to the parking area at the beginning of the trail. 

Is there a bus from Theth to Tirana?

There is no direct bus from Theth to Tirana city, therefore you must transfer buses in Shkoder. First, take a bus from Theth to Shkoder and then another bus from Shkoder to Tirana city.

Buses from Shkoder to Tirana depart at 6:00, 7:00, 7:45, 8:30, 9:15, 10:00, 10:45, 11:30, 12:00, 13:00, 14:00, 15:00, 16:00 and 17:00. A bus ticket from Shkoder to Tirana costs 500 Leke (5 euros) per person. You must pay in cash with the bus driver. Bus drivers do not have a booking website. 

The bus journey from Shkoder to Tirana takes approximately 2 hours. And you will be dropped off at the Tirana Bus Terminal North and South Albania outside the city centre of Tirana. 

Once you are at the Tirana Bus Terminal North and South Albania, you can take a city bus to the city centre. Exit the bus terminal and cross the street towards the “Terminal Hotel”, there is a bus stop in front of the petrol station. Get on a bus to “Qender”, which means city centre in the Albanian language.
