Buses depart between 5:30AM-18:00PM from the Tirana Bus Terminal North and South Albania and cost 12 EUR p.p. A taxi will cost you 170-185 EUR. A rental car is at least 20-25 EUR a day, more in July/August.

How do I get from Tirana to Himare?

You can get from Tirana to Himare by bus, by taxi or by car. Let me give you an overview of your travel options.

Tirana to Himare bus

• Buses from Tirana to Himare depart at 5:30 AM, 7:00 AM, 7:30 AM, 9:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 13:00 PM, 15:30 PM and 18:00 PM.
• A bus ticket from Tirana to Himare will cost you 12 euros per person. 
• You are expected to pay cash with the bus driver upon boarding the bus.
• Buses from Tirana to Himare depart from the Tirana Bus Terminal North and South Albania, which is located outside of the city centre of Tirana. 

Tirana to Himare taxi

• A taxi from Tirana to Himare will cost you between 170-185 euros per taxi. 
• Obviously, prices between taxi drivers vary slightly. 
• However, these prices are based on taxi prices lists published online by the Tirana Airport Taxi Service and Merr Taxi Tirana. 

Tirana to Himare car

• A basic rental car at Tirana airport or in Tirana’s city centre will cost you at least 20-25 EUR a day.
• Of course, car rental rates are higher in July and August, due to the tourist season. 
• It will take you approximately 5 hours to drive from Tirana to Himare, via Durres, Fier and Vlore. 
• You can choose to drive over the Llogara Pass for a nice view or through the Llogara Tunnel for a shortcut. The Llogara Tunnel will save you 45 minutes in driving time.

How to get from Tirana to Himare by bus?

You can take a bus from Tirana to Himare. Buses from Tirana to Himare depart from the Tirana Bus Terminal North and South Albania between 5:30 AM and 18:00 PM.

Buses from Tirana to Himare depart at 5:30 AM, 7:00 AM, 7:30 AM, 9:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 13:00 PM, 15:30 PM and 18:00 PM. The bus journey from Tirana to Himare will take approximately 5 hours. 

• Tirana to Himare bus timetable – Buses from Tirana to Himare depart at 5:30 AM, 7:00 AM, 7:30 AM, 9:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 13:00 PM, 15:30 PM and 18:00 PM.

A bus ticket from Tirana to Himare will cost you 12 euros per person. You are expected to pay cash with the bus driver upon boarding the bus. So it is a good idea to always carry some euros cash and a small amount of Albanian Leke with you in cash when travelling by bus in Albania. 

You cannot book your bus ticket from Tirana to Himare online. Because the bus drivers do not have a booking website or online reservation system. Locals in Albania always pay cash for bus tickets in person, so I recommend you do as the locals do. Of course, you can go to an ATM in the city centre to withdraw some cash.

The bus terminal is called: “ Terminali i Autobusave të Veriut dhe Jugut” in the Albanian language. And the bus terminal is located near the Casa Italia Mega Outlet outside the city centre of Tirana. 

The Tirana Bus Terminal North and South Albania is located outside the city center of Tirana. If you want to get to the bus terminal from the city centre, you can take a short taxi ride, a metered taxi may end up costing you 10-15 euros. Or you can take a city bus. From Tirana’s central Skanderbeg Square walk to the back of the National History Museum, find the bus stop in Rruga Ded Gjo Luli and get on a bus in the direction of “Instituti”, which stops at the bus terminal.

How much is a taxi from Tirana to Himare?

A taxi from Tirana to Himare will cost you between 170-185 euros per taxi. Obviously, prices between taxi drivers vary slightly. However, these prices are based on taxi prices lists published online by the Tirana Airport Taxi Service and Merr Taxi Tirana. 

• The taxi fare from Tirana airport to Himare is 170 euros according to the official Tirana Airport Taxi Service price list as published on their website. 

How to get from Tirana to Himare by car?

You can rent a car at Tirana Airport or in the city centre of Tirana. And drive your rental car from Tirana to Himare. 

A rental car at Tirana airport will cost you at least 20-25 euros per day for the most basic rental car available. Of course, rental car rates are much higher in July and August due to the tourist season. 

There is a helpful list of car rental companies on the website of Tirana Airport. You can find mobile numbers and email addresses for all the car rental companies at Tirana Airport. You can quickly request car rental prices and ask questions via WhatsApp. Add several car rentals at Tirana Airport on WhatsApp and compare rates.

To give you an insight into what it would cost to rent a basic rental car, I did reach out to several car rental companies at Tirana Airport.

Tirana Airport car rental prices (starting from): 

• Albania Airport Rent a Car charges 20 euros per day for a manual Skoda Fabia from 2018.
• Avis Rent a Car Tirana Airport charges 20 euros per day for a manual Opel Corsa or 25 euros per day for an automatic Opel Corsa. 
• Pepa Rent a Car Tirana Airport charges 20 euros per day for an economy car, like a Skoda.
• RCA Rent a Car in Albania Tirana Airport charges 15 euros per day for a small manual car, like a Mitsubishi Spacestar or Citroen C1 or Peugeot 108.
• Green Motion Rent Car Tirana Airport charges 15 euros per day for the economy category. It can be an Opel Corsa or Dacia Sandero or Skoda Fabia.
• Viaggia Rent Tirana Airport charges 18 euros per day for a manual Fiat Panda from 2023.
• ARA Auto Rental Tirana Airport charges 17 euros per day for a small manual car or 20 euros per day for an automatic car. Brands like Citroen or Peugeot are available.
• G Rentals Tirana Airport charges 20 euros per day for a Dacia Stepway.
• Sixt Car Rental Tirana Airport charges 15 euros per day for a Mitsubishi Space Star. 

Of course, it is important to bear in mind that car rental rates can be a lot higher in the tourist high season. The summer months like July and August are the top of the high season, so car rental can be a lot pricier. Especially, since the basic or cheap rental car may not be available anymore and only a more luxurious and expensive car is available. 

Do reach out to several car rental companies before you travel. I have spoken to tourists who paid 50-70 euros a day for a rental car. So it is best to do your research before you travel.

IMPORTANT! Driving in Albania can be challenging for a foreigner. The Albanian drivers do have a chaotic and sometimes aggressive style of driving. So if you have any doubts about driving, do not do it! Hire a taxi, book a tour or travel by bus instead. Safety comes first.

To drive from Tirana to Himare, you have two options:

• Option 1: Drive from Tirana via Durres, Fier, Vlore to Himare, over the Llogara Pass
• Option 2: Drive from Tirana via Durres, Fier, Vlore to Himare, through the Llogara Tunnel

In 2024, a new tunnel was opened under the Llogara Pass. If you drive from Vlore through the Llogara Tunnel, you save 45 minutes on your journey time to Himare. The alternative is the old route over the Llogara Pass, which does offer beautiful views of the coastline and you could have coffee or lunch at a restaurant on top of the Llogara Pass and take in the view. 

It is up to you, do you want to get to your destination as quickly as possible or do you want to enjoy the view of the coastline?

How long does it take to get from Tirana to Himare?

It will take you around 5 hours to drive from Tirana to Himare. You can take a shortcut by taking the Llogara Tunnel that was opened in 2024. The Llogara Tunnel shaves 45 minutes off your journey time, as you won’t need to drive over the Llogara Pass. 

Bear in mind that Google Maps often underestimates the actual journey time in Albania. The coastal route between Vlore and Himare cannot be driven quickly, as the road turns and twists along the coastline. You must drive this section of road carefully and slow down. So if you use Google Maps to drive in Albania, always check with locals in your hotel if the route is good and add an extra 1-2 hours on the estimated journey time.

How to get from Tirana airport to Himare?

There is no direct bus from Tirana airport to Himare. So you could travel from Tirana airport to Himare by either transferring buses in Tirana or in Vlore en route to Himare.

• Option 1: Tirana airport to Tirana bus terminal + Bus from Tirana to Himare
• Option 2: Tirana airport to Vlore bus + Vlore to Himare bus

To travel from Tirana airport to Himare by bus, you have two options. Firstly, you could take a bus from Tirana airport to the Tirana Bus Terminal North and South Albania. And then once you are at the bus terminal you could get on a bus from Tirana to Himare. 

Secondly, you could take a bus from Tirana airport to Vlore. And then transfer onto a bus from Vlore to Himare. 

Option 1: Tirana airport to Tirana bus terminal + Bus from Tirana to Himare

Although, there is no direct bus from Tirana airport to Himare. Instead, you could travel by bus from Tirana airport to the Tirana Bus Terminal and then get on a bus to Himare.

At the airport, get on the bus from Tirana airport to Tirana. Before boarding the bus, ask the bus driver if he can drop you off at the Tirana Bus Terminal North and South Albania. The Tirana Bus Terminal North and South Albania is en route to the city centre of Tirana. However, it does require the bus driver to get off the highway to drop you off, before getting back onto the highway to continue the journey to the city centre. 

Buses from Tirana Airport to Tirana depart 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There is a bus from Tirana Airport to Tirana at 1:00 AM, 2:00 AM, 3:00 AM, 4:00 AM, 5:00 AM, 6:00 AM, 7:00 AM, 8:00 AM, 9:00 AM, 10:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 12:00 PM, 13:00 PM, 14:00 PM, 15:00 PM, 16:00 PM, 17:00 PM, 18:00 PM, 19:00 PM, 20:00 PM, 21:00 PM, 22:00 PM, 23:00 PM and 24:00 PM. 

A bus ticket from Tirana airport to Tirana costs 400 LEK (4 euros) per person. You can buy your bus ticket in cash from the bus driver. Or you can book your bus ticket in advance on the Luna Travel website. 

Once the bus driver drops you off at the Tirana Bus Terminal North and South Albania, you can transfer onto a bus from Tirana to Himare. 

Buses from Tirana to Himare depart at 5:30 AM, 7:00 AM, 7:30 AM, 9:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 13:00 PM, 15:30 PM and 18:00 PM. A bus ticket from Tirana to Himare will cost you 12 euros per person. The bus journey from Tirana to Himare will last approximately 5 hours. You are expected to pay cash with the bus driver upon boarding the bus.

Option 2: Tirana airport to Vlore bus + Vlore to Himare bus

The alternative is taking a bus from Tirana Airport to Vlore. And then transferring onto a bus from Vlore to Himare. 

There are direct buses from Tirana airport to Vlore. Buses from Tirana airport to Vlore depart at 00:45 AM, 3:30 AM, 9:30 AM, 11:00 AM, 12:30 PM, 14:00 PM, 16:00 PM, 18:00 PM, 20:00 PM and 22:15 PM. A bus ticket from Tirana airport to Vlore costs 1200 Leke (12 euros) during the day time hours and it costs 1500 Leke (15 euros) for a bus during the night. You can pay cash with the bus driver upon boarding the bus. 

Once you are dropped off in Vlore, you can transfer onto a bus to Himare. The bus from Vlore to Himare departs from the Bus Terminal Vlore. You can see the location of the bus terminal on Google Maps here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/X7KqGgomdGXywo6v7 

Buses from Vlore to Himare depart at 6:00 AM, 8:00 AM, 10:00 AM, 11:30 AM, 12:30 PM and 14:30 PM. A bus ticket from Vlore to Himare costs 500 Leke (5 euros) and you can pay cash with the bus driver upon boarding the bus. Bus drivers do not have a website or online reservation system. 

How to get from Himare to Tirana airport?

There is no direct bus from Himare to Tirana airport. But you could take a bus from Himare to the Bus Terminal in Tirana and then take a bus/taxi from the bus terminal to Tirana airport.

Buses from Himare to Tirana depart at 5:00 AM, 7:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 12:30 PM, 15:00 PM and 18:00 PM. 

A bus ticket from Himare to Tirana will cost you 12 euros per person. Buses from Himare to Tirana are operated by Riviera Tours and Olgeno Travel & Tours. You cannot book these buses online in advance. Instead, you are expected to pay cash upon boarding the bus in person. 

Buses from Himare to Tirana depart along the main highway. You can get on a bus from Himare to Tirana at this location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/TgHRZbGJUNiYbEAb9 

The bus journey from Himare to Tirana will take approximately 5 hours. At the end of the bus journey, the bus driver will drop passengers off at the Tirana Bus Terminal North and South Albania. 

From the Tirana Bus Terminal North and South Albania, you can take a short taxi ride 15-20 euros to Tirana Airport. Or you can take a bus. 

To get to Tirana Airport, you must take a bus from the Tirana Bus Terminal North and South Albania via Rinas in the direction of Fushe-Kruje. Tirana Airport is located in the Rinas village, so buses that drive to Fushe-Kruje via Rinas, can drop you off at Tirana Airport. Bear in mind that not all buses to Fushe-Kruje drive via Rinas, so you must ask the bus driver before boarding the bus. 

What to do in Himare, Albania?

Himare is mainly a beach destination. From Himare, you can visit a variety of nearby beaches like: 

• Gjipe Beach – A remote highlight!
• Livadhi Beach
• Jale Beach
• The Bay of Porto Palermo & sightseeing at the castle on the little peninsula
• Filikuri Beach
• Llamani Beach
• Potami Beach

The main sightseeing spots near Himare are the ruins of Himare Castle and you can visit the castle in the Bay of Porto Palermo.
