The Tirana Mosaic is a hidden sightseeing spot in Tirana. In this blog post, I discuss if the Tirana Mosaic is worth visiting and how to get there.
Tirana Mosaic – The Tirana Mosaic is an archaeological site in the center of Tirana. The ancient mosaic was the mosaic floor of a Paleo-Christian church from the 4th/5th century. The Mosaic is only a 15-20 min walk from the city center but in a hidden spot away from other sights. Opening times: 8:00 – 17:00. Ticket: Free.
In this blog post, I share all you need to know about the Tirana Mosaic. I will share where to find the Tirana Mosaic, the history of the Mosaic and what you will find at the archaeological site. I will also include practical info like pricing, opening hours and updates on the recent renovation and architecture added to the site. Let’s explore Tirana’s ancient history.
Is the Tirana Mosaic Worth visiting?
If you are staying in Tirana and you are exploring the city center by foot, it is worth walking to the Tirana Mosaic for about 15-20 minutes.
The Tirana Mosaic (in Albanian language: Mozaiku i Tiranës) is the only archaeological monument in Tirana city. In 1972, the Tirana Mosaic was discovered by chance. At the time, Albania was communist country and new apartments were being constructed in the Partizani neighborhood of Tirana. And by chance, the Tirana Mosaic was found.
The archaeological site called “The Tirana Mosaic” was originally a Roman villa from a winemaker in the 1st century AD. This villa was converted into an agricultural complex in the 3rd century. And in the 4th and 5th century AD the site was converted into a Paleo-Christian church or basilica and the mosaic floor was added.
At the site, you will see two amphorae, which were a type of stone wine container belonging to the 1st century winemaker who used to live there.
Interesting archaeological details to notice at the Tirana Mosaic:
- The mosaic shows geometric motifs, flowers and fishes typical for early Christianity
- With the help of maps and brochures available at the site, you can make out the two rectangular rooms and the semi-circle shaped apse of the Paleo-Christian Basilica.
- The two amphorae (=a type of stone wine container) belonged to the 1st century winemaker.
But of course, the highlight is the mosaic that belonged to the Paleo-Christian Basilica. The Mosaic was laying on the floor of the church. The mosaic was decorated with geometric and floral motifs that you can see up close when you are at the site. You can also see the shape of the church with a large room, a smaller room and a semi circle room called an “apse” where churches typically have an altar.
Visiting the Tirana Mosaic is not a full day trip by any means. It only takes about 15-20 minutes to walk to the Tirana Mosaic by foot. And visiting the site takes 5-10 minutes only. But it is worth visiting as a part of a walking tour of Tirana. Or if you are driving to another city, you can make a short stop at the Tirana Mosaic before exiting the city.
The Tirana Mosaic perfectly fits if you are interested in the Ancient and Roman history of Albania. You could perhaps start with the Tirana Mosaic on your arrival day, and in the following days you could visit the Roman Amphitheatre of Durres, the Apollonia archaeological park, the Mansio ad Quintum Roman trading post in Elbasan and Butrint UNESCO site.
The Tirana Mosaic was renovated in 2025, and a new protective roof and visitor center were added to the site. The visitor center has information boards about the ancient history of the Mosaic and other archaeological sites from the ancient times in Albania. The beautiful protective roof above the mosaic has decorative “flower of life” symbols, as the inspiration was taken from the Mosaic of Tirana itself.
What you need to know before visiting the Tirana Mosaic
- The Tirana Mosaic is the only archaeological site in Tirana. Albania has many more archaeological treasures from the ancient times, but these are outside Tirana in places like Apollonia and Butrint.
- The Tirana Mosaic is only a 15-20 minute walk from the central Skanderbeg Square in Tirana.
- However, the Tirana Mosaic is located away from other sightseeing spots and it is a bit hidden, so you have to specifically go looking for the Mosaic of Tirana.
- At the time of writing this blog, the Tirana Mosaic is free of charge.
- Opening Times: 8 AM – 17:00 PM daily.
Tirana Mosaic pricing
Currently, the Tirana Mosaic is free of charge to visit. The Mosaic was renovated in 2025 and a protective roof, visitor center and ticket office were added to the site. So perhaps in the future, there will be chargeable tickets at the ticket office.
Tirana Mosaic opening hours
The Tirana Mosaic is open daily between 8 AM and 17:00 PM.
Tirana Mosaic history
This is the history of the Tirana Mosaic:
- 1st century AD – The Tirana Mosaic was a Roman villa that belonged to a local winemaker.
- 3rd century AD – The villa was converted into an agricultural complex
- 4th and 5th century AD – The site was converted into a Paleo-Christian Basilica and the mosaic floor was added.
- 1972 – During the communist period in Tirana, the Tirana Mosaic was discovered by chance whilst new apartments were being constructed in the Partizani neighborhood of Tirana.
- 2025 – The Tirana Mosaic was renovated and a new protective roof, visitor center and ticket office were added according to the designs of SONarchitects.
Mosaic of Tirana architects
In 2025, the Tirana Mosaic was renovated. According to a design by SONarchitects a new visitor center, ticket office and protective roof were added to the Tirana Mosaic.
Of course, tourism has grown significantly in the past few years in Albania and the new design makes the site more attractive to tourists, researchers and history enthusiasts.
The most interesting part of the design is the protective room. The oval-shaped roof floats above the ancient mosaic to protect it from the weather. It also has decorative “flower of life” symbols inspired by the ancient mosaic. According to the architects, the “protective petals of the flower form a shelter for the mosaic”. It certainly is a very interesting design that draws you in and makes you want to explore the site!
How to get to the Tirana Mosaic?
The Mosaic of Tirana is located in the city center of Tirana. However, it is a bit away from the other sightseeing spots. In other words, it is a bit hidden away and you can only find it if you go looking for it.
You can see the location of the Tirana Mosaic on Google Maps here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/gS2yohWqEJ3qTGu18
From the central Skanderbeg Square, it is only a 15-20 minute walk to the Mosaic of Tirana. If you are new to the city, I suggest you walk from Skanderbeg Square to the “Tirana Ring Center” along the Rruga e Durresit. The Tirana Ring Center is a shopping center next to the “Zogu i Zi” Roundabout. Once you are at the Tirana Ring Center, the Tirana Mosaic is very close and only a 5 minute walk.
