Do you need to pre-book buses in Albania?

In Albania, you can pre-book international buses to other countries. However, intercity buses within Albania’s borders can often not be pre-booked.

National buses within Albania are operated by independent bus drivers. These independent bus drivers often do not have a website and do not have an online reservations system. So basically, the bus driver will only take cash payments in person.

Which means you cannot reserve or pre-book a lot of the national buses within Albania. All you can do to get a seat is:

  • Go to the bus terminal early
  • Find a bus with you desired destination, buses usually display a city name in their front window
  • Pay cash to the bus driver

In another country, not being able to find a bus operator’s website might be unusual or questionable. However, in Albania many bus drivers operate a cash only and in person only business, so that is the common practice in Albania. Albania is still a quite old fashioned country in that regard.

International buses to other counties can often be booked online, so those are the exception to the rule. However, you can still go to the Tirana East Terminal at the TEG shopping centre and pay for a bus ticket in cash at one of the bus offices. So for international buses it is up to you to decide if you want to pre-book online or pay cash in person on the spot.

Is the Tirana airport bus 24 hours?

The bus from Tirana airport to Tirana and back operates 24 hours. The bus departs every hour on the hour all day and all night, 7 days a week and all year round.

There are buses from Tirana airport to Durres, Fier, Vlore and Shkoder. However, these buses do not operate 24 hours a day, they operate on a timetable. Which you can find above.

Do buses run on Sunday in Albania?

Buses do run on Sunday in Albania at the same time they operate every day. Bus timetables in Albania do not vary between days of the week and the weekend. Timetables are consistent every day of the week.

Do buses operate at the same time every day of the week?

Buses in Albania operate at the same time every day of the week including the weekend. There are no variations between days of the week in the timetables. Bus timetables in Albania are the same every day of the week.

Are buses in Albania reliable?

Buses in Albania operate regularly. But the bus system in Albania is a bit different from most western countries.

For instance, buses are operated by independent bus drivers. These bus drivers do have a bus timetable that they may display in their bus window for instance. However, bus drivers may depart a bit earlier if the bus is full or wait a bit longer if the bus is not full enough. As they need enough passengers to make a profit.

Moreover, bus drivers in Albania often do not have a website and/or online reservations system. Since you won’t be able to book online, you must go to the bus station early and in person to guarantee a seat on the bus.

Buses are often not equipped with a card machine, so I recommend you always carry some Euros and Albanian Lek in cash with you, so that you can pay cash to the bus driver upon boarding the bus.

Can I book my bus ticket online for buses in Albania?

You can usually book International bus tickets from Albania to another country online. However, national buses in Albania cannot be booked online.

Intercity buses in Albania are operated by independent bus drivers. These bus drivers operate an in-person business with cash payments. Many independent bus drivers do not have a website and they do not have an online reservation system. Therefore, these bus tickets cannot be booked online.

The only way to get on the intercity bus is to go to the bus terminal early, find the bus and pay cash to the driver. Bus drivers often do not have a card machine, so their only way of payment is cash in hand, either Leke or Euros.

Can I pay for my bus ticket by card in Albania?

Many intercity buses in Albania cannot be paid by card. Because the bus driver does not have a card machine onboard the bus. Intercity buses in Albania are operated by independent drivers. The drivers usually do not have a website, no online reservation system and no card machine. So the only way to board these intercity buses is to go to the bus terminal in person and pay cash to the bus driver when boarding the bus.

Therefore, I highly recommend you carry cash money with you in Albania. Bring some foreign currency like Euros, USD or Pounds with you and exchange a small amount for Albanian Leke upon your arrival in Albania.

How do I pay for my bus ticket in Albania?

Local buses and intercity buses in Albania must be paid by cash, because buses are often not equipped with a card machine. International buses can be booked and paid online in advance or you can still pay cash at the Tirana East Terminal at the TEG Shopping Centre in person.

How can I make sure I get a seat on the bus if I cannot book my bus ticket online?

Intercity buses in Albania cannot be booked online as the independent bus drivers often do not have a website and/or online reservations system. So the only way to guarantee a seat is arriving at the bus station early. Bus drivers do not take reservations in advance, so buses are filled up first come, first serve.

Why can I not find the bus company online?

Many intercity buses in Albania are operated by independent drivers and these independent bus drivers often do not have a website or online booking system.

Although not having a website may be alarming in another country, this is common practice in Albania. Bus drivers operate in person only. So the only way to guarantee a seat on the bus is getting to the bus station early in person. And pay for your bus ticket in cash with the bus driver.

Do Albanian buses have toilets?

Many intercity buses are small minibuses that are not equipped with a toilet. The bus driver may make some stops at a petrol station to make use of the facilities there.
