Taxis that drive all the way to Theth are usually 4 wheel drive taxis. Because the road between Shkoder and Theth leads high into the mountains. So you will see Jeeps taking passengers to Theth, not regular city taxis. 

Taxi drivers who drive to Theth on a regular basis also stay overnight in Theth frequently, as it may be too dark to drive back over the mountain road or they may wait for passengers to go back from Theth to Shkoder the next day.

Is there a train from Tirana airport to Theth?

There is no train from Tirana airport to Theth. So if you want to travel from Tirana airport to Theth, you can travel by bus, by taxi or by car only.

Train travel within Albania’s borders is limited. At the moment, there are 2-3 trains per week between Durres and Elbasan. And there is 1 x train per week between Shkoder and Lac. These are the old trains remaining from the communist period in Albania. So these trains do not drive at a high speed. 

That being said, a new railway is under construction between Tirana city, Tirana airport and Durres. At the time of writing this blog post in early 2025, the railway is still under construction and not operational yet. 

Due to the limited number of trains in operation, local people in Albania make use of minibuses to get to their destination.

There are direct buses from Shkoder to Tirana airport operated by Hermes Airport. A bus ticket from Shkoder to Tirana airport costs 1000 Leke (10 euros) per person. You can buy a bus ticket at the Hermes Airport office in Shkoder. 

Buses from Shkoder to Tirana airport depart at 3:00 AM, 5:30 AM, 7:30 AM, 9:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 14:00 PM, 16:00 PM and 18:00 PM. The bus journey from Shkoder to Tirana airport takes approximately 1.5-2 hours.

How do I get from Tirana to Theth?

You can get from Tirana to Theth by bus, by taxi or by car. There is no direct bus from Tirana to Theth, you must transfer in Shkoder. First, take a bus from Tirana to Shkoder. Buses depart from the Tirana Bus Terminal North and South Albania between 5:00 AM and 18:00 PM. A bus ticket costs 500 Leke (5 euros). Then, take a bus from Shkoder to Theth. Buses depart from Shkoder at 7:00 AM and 14:00 PM. A bus ticket costs 12 euros per person. A direct 4 wheel drive taxi from Tirana to Theth costs 180 euros.

The bus stop is located in Rruga Ded Gjo Luli. Get on a bus with the destination “Instituti”, this bus makes a stop at the Tirana Bus Terminal North and South Albania.

Buses from Shkoder to Tirana depart at 6:00, 7:00, 7:45, 8:30, 9:15, 10:00, 10:45, 11:30, 12:00, 13:00, 14:00, 15:00, 16:00 and 17:00. A bus ticket from Shkoder to Tirana costs 500 Leke (5 euros) per person. You must pay in cash with the bus driver. Bus drivers do not have a booking website.
