• So for the moment, you are choosing between Tirana Airport in Albania or Corfu Airport on the Greek Corfu island.

Closest airport to Ksamil

• The closest airport to Ksamil is Corfu airport on the Greek Corfu island. 
• If you have not booked a flight from Tirana Airport yet, you can check if there are any flights from Corfu Airport. 
• Step 1: Ksamil to Saranda by bus/taxi. From Ksamil, you can take a bus or taxi to nearby Saranda city. The distance between Ksamil and Saranda is short, so it may only take 15-30 minutes, but it depends a lot on traffic. 
• Step 2: Saranda to Corfu ferry. Once you are in Saranda, you can go to the Port of Saranda and take a ferry to Corfu island. Ferry duration 35 min by speed ferry or 1H15min by slower passenger ship/car ferry. Price usually between 19-30 EUR per person. 
• Step 3: Port of Corfu to Corfu Airport. From the Port of Corfu, you can take a bus or taxi to Corfu Airport which only takes about 15-20 min. 

Ksamil to Tirana Airport car rental

• Rental car prices usually start from 20-25 EUR a day in Ksamil and Saranda. 
• That being said, you may end up paying a lot more in the summer months, as car rental prices increase in the popular tourist season. 
• Usually, renting a car in Albania only makes sense if you are making a round trip. Like Tirana Airport to Ksamil and back to Tirana Airport. 
• If you ask car rental companies in Ksamil or Saranda for a one-way car rental, they may add a drop-off fee of 150-300 EUR for instance, which makes that very unattractive. 
• If you do want to rent a car, I would recommend you find several car rental companies on Google Maps and message them via WhatsApp before you travel to agree on a reasonable price.
• Driving in Albania can be a challenge as a foreigner, as some local drivers have an aggressive style of driving and may not follow the rules on the road. So you would need to be an alert, experienced and confident driver.

Ksamil to Tirana Airport train

• There is no train from Ksamil to Tirana Airport. 
• Ksamil has no train station and there are no railway tracks to/from Ksamil.
• Saranda has no train station and there are no railway tracks to/from Saranda.
• So it is impossible to travel from Ksamil to Tirana Airport. 
• Train travel within Albania is not really an option as a tourist. There are only between 0-4 operational trains in the entire country, those are very slow and may not actually operate. So if you are looking for public transport, you will end up travelling by bus.
• That being said, a new railway is under construction between Tirana, Tirana Airport and Durres, but it is unclear when this railway will open.

• Ksamil to Tirana Airport distance = 272 kilometers via the inland road.
• Ksamil to Tirana Airport duration = 5.5 hours to drive.
• Google Maps underestimates the time it actually takes to drive in Albania. 
• According to Google Maps, it takes 3 hours and 43 minutes to drive from Ksamil to Tirana Airport. That is not possible in real life.
• I would estimate your journey time at least 5.5 hours from Ksamil to Tirana Airport. 
• The quickest route from Ksamil to Tirana Airport is from Ksamil via Saranda, Kardhiq Castle, Tepelene, Fier, Lushnje and Durres to Tirana Airport.

How much is a taxi from Ksamil to Tirana Airport?

Although a taxi price like 210 EUR from Ksamil to Tirana Airport may seem like a lot, it is reasonable because of the driving distance and journey time. The journey from Ksamil to Tirana Airport takes around 5.5 hours, so it will take the taxi driver all day to drive from Ksamil to Tirana Airport and back home. 

Is there a bus from Ksamil to Tirana Airport?

There is no direct bus from Ksamil to Tirana Airport. But you could travel from Ksamil to Tirana Airport by bus, if you transfer buses 2 x times. 

• Step 1: Ksamil to Saranda bus
  Price: 150 LEK (1.50 EUR), maybe 20-30 min, depends on heavy traffic in summer.
• Step 2: Saranda to Tirana bus (drops at Tirana Bus Terminal)
  Price: 1500 LEK (15 EUR), between 4H20min – 5 hours via inland highway
• Step 3: Tirana bus terminal to Tirana Airport bus
  Price: 300 LEK (3 EUR), 20 min

First, you need to take a bus from Ksamil to nearby Saranda city. From Saranda, you can take a bus to Tirana, which drops you off at the Tirana Bus Terminal. And then finally, a shuttle bus from the Tirana Bus Terminal to Tirana Airport. 

• No direct bus: Ksamil to Tirana Airport bus
• No direct bus: Saranda to Tirana Airport bus

So basically, there is no direct bus from Ksamil to Tirana Airport. And there is no direct bus from Saranda to Tirana Airport. So you will need to go from Ksamil to Saranda, from Saranda to Tirana Bus Terminal and then from Tirana Bus Terminal to Tirana Airport by bus. 

Let me take you through each of the steps you need to take to travel from Ksamil to Tirana Airport by bus. 

Step 1: Ksamil to Saranda bus

The first step is taking a bus from Ksamil to Saranda. There are buses that depart from Butrint (to the South of Ksamil) and drive through Ksamil on their way to Saranda. 

So below, I will include the bus timetable for buses departing from Butrint to Saranda. These buses depart from Butrint and about 10-15 minutes later, these buses stop in Ksamil en route to Saranda. 

• Ksamil to Saranda bus timetable: Buses depart from Butrint and 10-15 minutes later these buses will stop in Ksamil before driving onwards to Saranda. Buses depart from Butrint at: 7:00 AM, 7:30 AM, 8:00 AM, 8:30 AM, 9:00 AM, 9:30 AM, 10:00 AM, 10:30 AM, 11:00 AM, 11:30 AM, 12:30 PM, 13:30 PM, 14:30 PM, 15:30 PM, 16:30 PM, 17:00 PM, 17:30 PM, 18:00 PM, 18:30 PM, 19:00 PM and 19:30 PM. 
• IMPORTANT: The bus timetable from Ksamil to Saranda changes with the seasons. The latest bus timetable will be displayed at the bus stops. You will see a printed A4 document with the latest bus timetable hanging at the bus stop. In the summer months, there may be additional buses later in the evening. In the winter months, there will be less frequent buses and buses will stop operating earlier. 

There is no large bus station in Ksamil. So to get on the bus from Ksamil to Saranda, you must go to one of the “Ksamil bus stops” indicated on Google Maps.

Ksamil to Saranda bus ticket price

A bus ticket from Ksamil to Saranda costs 150 LEK (1.50 EUR) per person. You are expected to pay cash onboard the bus. So I highly recommend you have exactly 150 LEK or 200 LEK with you in cash before boarding the bus.

The bus from Ksamil to Saranda can be extremely busy and packed with people in the summer months. An employee will pass through the bus collecting cash payments, so it is best to have the cash 150 LEK ready. 

My personal recommendation is to always have cash with you whilst travelling in Albania. Euros are widely accepted, so bringing some euros with you in cash is always good. And then upon arrival in Albania, you exchange a small amount for Albanian Leke to pay small things like bus tickets, coffee and pastries with the local currency. 

How to book the bus from Ksamil to Saranda?

You cannot book the bus from Ksamil to Saranda online. You can only get on the bus in person and pay for your bus ticket in cash onboard the bus. 

In Albania, it is expected that you book and pay for your bus tickets in person with cash. Many intercity buses and city buses cannot be booked online, as the bus drivers do not have a website or online reservation system. Moreover, many buses do not have a card machine. So bus drivers take cash and board passengers “first come, first serve”. Therefore, it is always good to get to the bus stop early. 

How long is the bus from Ksamil to Saranda?

The bus journey from Ksamil to Saranda is only 20-30 minutes. However, it can be delayed significantly in the summer months due to heavy traffic. 

INSIDER INFORMATION: Many tourists report the bus getting to the bus stop later than expected. And the bus was delayed in traffic. And the bus was packed with passengers and overcrowded with people. So the bus journey from Ksamil to Saranda is not a luxury trip by any means. But it is a very affordable way to get from Ksamil to Saranda. 

Where should I get off the bus in Saranda?

The bus from Saranda to Ksamil makes several stops in Saranda. The best location to get off the bus is in the city center near SOS Bar, Friendship Park and the Archaeological Ruins of the Basilica-Synagogue. So that you can transfer onto the bus from Saranda to Tirana nearby.

Step 2: Saranda to Tirana bus (drops at Tirana Bus Terminal)

Once you are in Saranda, you can get on a bus from Saranda to Tirana. There is no direct bus from Saranda to Tirana Airport. So you must take the bus from Saranda to Tirana, which will drop you off at the Tirana Bus Terminal North and South Albania. And then from the Tirana bus terminal, you can take a shuttle bus or a taxi to the airport.

Saranda to Tirana bus timetable

Buses from Saranda to Tirana depart at 5:00 AM, 5:30 AM, 6:00 AM, 6:30 AM, 6:30 AM, 8:30 AM, 9:30 AM, 10:45 AM, 13:00 PM, 14:00 PM, 17:00 PM, 18:00 PM, 21:00 PM and 22:00 PM. 

The buses from Saranda to Tirana are operated by 3 different bus agencies. Two bus agencies have an office in the city centre of Saranda: Trans Butrinti and Trans Dea. And you can find Olgeno Travel & Tours online. 

So if you are in the city center of Saranda near Friendship Park and the archaeological ruins of the Synagogue-Basilica, then you can walk to the bus agency of Trans Butrinti or Trans Dea.

Trans Butrinti Bus Agency

Trans Butrinti is one of the bus agencies in the city centre of Saranda, where you can get on a bus from Saranda to Tirana. Trans Butrinti has buses from Saranda to Tirana at 5:00 AM, 6:30 AM, 8:30 AM, 9:30 AM, 10:45 AM, 14:00 PM, 17:00 PM and 22:00 PM. 

Trans Dea Bus Agency
The other bus agency in the city centre of Saranda is called Trans Dea. Trans Dea is more of a cafe where buses stop in front of the cafe along the street. Trans Dea offers buses from Saranda to Tirana at 5:30 AM and 21:00 PM. 

Olgeno Buses (takes longer: drives via coastline)
The final option is taking a bus from Olgeno Travel & Tours from Saranda via the coastline to Tirana. Olgeno operates buses from Saranda via the coastline to Tirana at 6:00 AM, 13:00 PM and 18:00 PM.

For Olgeno, you can have a look at their website online. The bus journey takes longer, as buses from Olgeno drive via the beautiful Albanian Riviera coastline (not the inland highway), so this is not a good option if you are trying to catch a flight.

Saranda to Tirana bus ticket price

The bus from Saranda to Tirana costs 1500 LEK (15 EUR) per person. It is best to have cash with you and pay either at the agency or with the bus driver upon boarding the bus. 

In Albania, it is expected that you pay for your bus tickets in cash. Therefore, I recommend you carry a combination of euros, which are widely accepted, and a small amount of Albanian Leke. You pay for your bus ticket with the bus driver upon boarding the bus.

Booking bus tickets online is often not possible, as bus drivers do not have a website or online reservation system. You will see that 99% of passengers pay cash for their bus tickets anywhere, so that is what I would recommend you do as well. 

The best way to guarantee a seat is to simply show up early at the bus station and ask locals where exactly the bus will depart. 

Saranda to Tirana bus duration

The bus journey from Saranda to Tirana takes approximately 4 hours and 20 minutes or 5 hours, if you take a bus that drives via the faster inland highway. Buses via the coastline, like the buses from Olgeno Travel & Tours, take longer as the coastline route turns and twists along the beaches. 

Saranda to Tirana bus (drops you off at the Tirana Bus Terminal)

Upon arrival in Tirana, the buses from Saranda will drop you off at the Tirana Bus Terminal North and South Albania. This bus terminal is about a 20 minute drive from Tirana Airport, so you can take the shuttle bus or a taxi. 

Step 3: Tirana bus terminal to Tirana Airport bus

Once the bus from Saranda to Tirana drops you off at the Tirana Bus Terminal, it is only a 20 minute drive to Tirana Airport. 

You can choose between taking the shuttle bus that departs from the Tirana Bus Terminal to Tirana Airport or you can take a taxi. A taxi from the Tirana Bus Terminal North and South Albania to Tirana Airport may cost you 15-25 EUR. 

The bus from the Tirana Bus Terminal North and South Albania to Tirana Airport is operated by Luna Travel. Luna Travel buses have a logo on the side of the bus, a sign saying airport in the window and there is a sign with a bus timetable displayed at the bus terminal.

I am telling you all this information, because the Tirana Bus Terminal can feel overwhelming. There are a great number of buses in many different directions. It is sometimes messy and feels unorganized. Bus drivers may also approach you asking where you are going to see if you are a passenger for their bus or not. 

The bus journey from the Tirana Bus Terminal North and South Albania to Tirana Airport takes only 20 minutes. Buses depart at: 7:00 AM, 8:00 AM, 9:00 AM, 10:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 12:00 PM, 13:00 PM, 14:00 PM, 15:00 PM, 16:00 PM, 17:00 PM and 18:00 PM. The bus from the Tirana Bus Terminal to Tirana Airport costs 300 LEK (3 EUR) per person. 

Can you fly from Ksamil to Tirana Airport?

You cannot fly from Ksamil to Tirana Airport. Because there is no airport in Ksamil. Although a new airport is under construction in Saranda, it is unclear when the new airport in Saranda will open and what flight destinations will be offered. 

Which airport is closest to Ksamil?

At the moment, the closest airport to Ksamil is Corfu airport on the Greek Corfu island. Although Corfu is a Greek island, it is right in front of the Albanian coastline. Taking a ferry from Saranda (near Ksamil) to Corfu only takes 35 minutes, if you take the speed ferry. So it is much closer than Tirana Airport, which may take a 5.5 hour drive from Ksamil to Tirana Airport.

In the future, there will be a new airport in Saranda. This new airport in Saranda is currently under construction. However, it is unclear when the new airport in Saranda will open and what flight destinations will be offered.

• Closest airport to Ksamil – The closest airport to Ksamil is Corfu Airport on the Greek Corfu island. 
• Ksamil to Corfu ferry – There is no direct ferry from Ksamil to Corfu island. So to get from Ksamil to Corfu airport, you must take 3 x steps.
• Step 1: Ksamil to Saranda by bus or by taxi. First, you must take a bus or taxi from Ksamil to Saranda. The distance from Ksamil to Saranda is only 15 kilometers. So it may take you 15-30 minutes to get to Saranda. However, traffic can be heavy, so that may slow your journey down.
• Step 2: Saranda to Corfu ferry. Once you are in Saranda, you can go to the Port of Saranda to get on a ferry from Saranda to Corfu. Speed ferries take 35 minutes. Slower passenger ship/car ferries take 1H15min. Ferry tickets may cost between 19-30 EUR per person.
• Step 3: Port of Corfu to Corfu Airport. Once you are on Corfu island, you can take a bus or taxi to Corfu Airport, which takes 15-20 minutes. 

The only operational airport in Albania is Tirana Airport. The drive from Ksamil to Tirana Airport may take you 5.5 hours by car or by taxi. By bus, it will take longer, as you will need to transfer buses in Saranda and at the Tirana Bus Terminal. 

In both Vlore and Saranda, there are new airports under construction. But Vlore Airport and Saranda Airport are both still under construction and not operational. 

How long does it take to get from Ksamil to Tirana Airport?

It may take around 5.5 hours to get from Ksamil to Tirana Airport. The quickest driving route from Ksamil to Tirana Airport is: Ksamil -> Saranda -> Kardhiq Castle -> Tepelene -> Fier -> Lushnje -> Durres -> Tirana Airport. 

Although other driving routes may seem shorter in Albania, this is the quickest route as these are the best quality national roads and highways.

• Ksamil to Tirana Airport distance = 272 kilometers via the inland road.
• Ksamil to Tirana Airport duration = 5.5 hours to drive.

The driving distance from Ksamil to Tirana Airport is 272 kilometers via the inland route mentioned above. It is important to remember that Google Maps underestimates the time it actually takes to drive in Albania. According to Google Maps it takes 3 hours and 43 minutes to get from Ksamil to Tirana Airport, which is not realistic. 

As a tourist on holiday, it is worth driving via the Albanian Riviera coastline. I would say that driving from Ksamil via Saranda, Himare, Dhermi, the Llogara Pass, Zvernec island and Vlore to Tirana will take a full day starting at 8:30 AM and ending in Tirana around 19:00 PM or 20:00 PM. It is worth making stops along this route as it is such a beautiful roadtrip. 

How much is a taxi from Tirana airport to Ksamil?

A taxi from Tirana Airport to Ksamil will cost around 210 EUR. The official Tirana Airport Taxi Service has a price list on their website, which states a taxi from Tirana Airport to Ksamil costs 210 EUR. 

Of course, you can also check with other popular taxi companies in Tirana like Speed Taxi, Merr Taxi, Lux Taxi, Green Taxi or City Taxi. Usually the quickest way to get taxi quotes is reaching out to taxi companies via WhatsApp. 

Uber Taxi does not exist in Albania. So you cannot take an Uber from Tirana Airport to Ksamil. Only a regular taxi service exists in Albania. Although there are some taxi apps, those do not offer reduced rates like UBER does abroad.

Is there a bus from Tirana airport to Ksamil?

There is no direct bus from Tirana Airport to Ksamil. And there is no direct bus from Tirana Airport to Saranda either. 

To get by bus from Tirana Airport to Ksamil, you must take 3 steps:

• Step 3: Bus from Saranda to Ksamil (150 LEK or 1.50 EUR, duration 20-30 minutes depending on traffic, departs between 6:30 AM – 20:15 PM, bus timetable changes with the seasons)

Can you fly from Tirana airport to Ksamil?

You cannot fly from Tirana Airport to Ksamil. Because there is no airport in Ksamil and the new airport in Saranda is still under construction. At the moment of writing this blog, it is unclear when the new airport in Saranda will open. 

If you are looking for a flight to get to Ksamil, you can either book a flight to Tirana Airport or Corfu Airport. From Tirana Airport, it is roughly a 5.5 hour drive to Ksamil by taxi or by car. By bus, it will take longer to get from Tirana Airport to Ksamil, because you would need to transfer buses at the Tirana Bus Terminal and in the center of Saranda.

If you can find an affordable flight to Corfu Airport, that might be a great option. From Corfu island, you can take a ferry to Saranda in Albania, which takes 35 minutes by speed ferry or 1H15min by passenger ship/car ferry. And then from Saranda, it is only 15 kilometers to Ksamil. 

Can you swim in Ksamil?

Ksamil is a wonderful beach for swimming. There is a lovely sandy beach, turquoise clear water and there are four little islands in front of the beach that you can swim or paddle to by boat.

I will mention here that Ksamil is a relatively small beach village, so it can be busy there in the summer months. And some travellers say that takes away from their experience or enjoyment. So that is something to consider. If you have a chance to visit Ksamil in the early season or in the fall, you may enjoy it more. 

That being said, Ksamil is considered “the pearl of the Albanian Riviera”. Because it is truly paradise-like. Watching the sun go down over the little islands is stunning. And there are these wooden piers or shutters leading into the water. It is truly a beautiful spot.

Of course, there are many hidden beaches along the Albanian Riviera. If you are in Ksamil, you could visit smaller beaches nearby like Mirror Beach or Monastery Beach.
