In the communist period in Albania, there were railways and trains connecting Tirana, Durres, Elbasan, Pogradec, Shkoder and Vlore. However, over the past four decades and since the fall of communism, these railways became old, in need of maintenance and refurbishment. Many of the old railway tracks are visible in the landscape, but not in operation.
