If you are looking for a cheaper alternative, there is no UBER Taxi in Albania. What you could do is send a message via WhatsApp or Messenger to several taxi companies based in Tirana. We live in Albania and our recommendation is that you pay cash for your bus tickets in Albania. Because that is what the locals in Albania do. Local people in Albania pay 99% of their transactions in cash. So the bus driver will expect you to pay cash upon boarding the bus, just like every other passenger is as well. 

Many national buses within Albania cannot be booked online. The vast majority of national buses are operated by independent bus drivers, who do not have a website or online reservation system. So the norm is to simply go to the bus terminal in person and pay cash on the spot. Online payment and reservation are not what the locals do or expect.

How far is it from Tirana Airport to Saranda?

The distance from Tirana Airport to Saranda is around 259 kilometers via the quicker inland highway. The quickest route from Tirana Airport to Saranda is driving from Tirana Airport to the main Tirana-Durres highway. Then taking the highway in the direction of Durres. Then drive via Durres, Kavaje, Rrogozhine, Lushnje, Fier, Tepelene and Kardhiq Castle to Saranda. #

Google Maps shows the route correctly. However, it underestimates the journey time at only 3 hours and 30 minutes. This journey will take you at least 4.5 – 5 hours. 

Is there a ferry from Tirana Airport to Saranda?

There is no ferry from Tirana Airport to Saranda. Although Tirana Airport is about a 45 minute drive from the Port of Durres at the seaside, you cannot take a ferry to Saranda. From Durres, there are international ferries to for instance Bari in Italy or Ancona in Italy. But there are no ferries that go along the Albanian coastline to Saranda. 

Is there a train from Tirana Airport to Saranda?

There is no train from Tirana Airport to Saranda. There are no railway tracks leading to Saranda at all, so going to Saranda by train is not possible. Saranda does not have a train station as there are no train tracks leading to Saranda.

A new railway is under construction between Tirana city, Tirana Airport and Durres. This new railway may open in 2026. Apart from this new railway, train travel within Albania’s borders is very limited with as little as 2-3 operational trains in the entire country. These few remaining trains date back to the communist period and are slow and old-fashioned. Therefore, Albanian people travel from city to city by minibus or by car, not by train.

Can I book a flight from Tirana Airport to Saranda?

You cannot book a flight from Tirana Airport to Saranda, because Saranda does not have an airport. Although a new airport is under construction in Saranda, this airport is not operational and it has not opened yet. 

At the moment of writing this blog post, the only operational airport in Albania is Tirana Airport. Two new airports are under construction in Vlore and in Saranda, but it is unclear when these airports will start operating flights.

That being said, you can look into flying to Corfu island. Corfu is a Greek island located in front of the Albanian coastline. When you fly to Corfu island, you could take a ferry boat from Corfu to Saranda. The quick hydrofoil ferries only take 35 minutes from Corfu to Saranda. And sometimes flights to Corfu Airport can be cheaper than flights to Tirana Airport.

How long does it take to get from Tirana Airport to Saranda?

It takes approximately 5 hours to get from Tirana Airport to Saranda. The quickest way to get from Tirana Airport to Saranda would be taking a taxi. A taxi driver would drive via the quicker inland route passing by Tepelene and Kardhiq Castle and that takes around 5 hours. 

If you are travelling by bus, it will most likely take you 6 hours or more. Because there is no direct bus from Tirana Airport to Saranda. So you would need to take the bus from Tirana Airport to the Tirana Bus Terminal first, which takes 20 minutes. And then another bus from the Tirana Bus Terminal to Saranda (4H20min – 5 hours). Considering there will be waiting time at the bus terminal, it will take you 6 hours or more. 

How to get from Tirana Airport to Ksamil?

You can travel from Tirana Airport to Ksamil by taxi, by car or by bus (2 x bus transfers). A taxi from Tirana Airport to Ksamil costs 210 euros.

There is no direct bus from Tirana Airport to Ksamil, so you would need to transfer buses twice. First, you would need to take a bus from Tirana Airport to the Tirana Bus Terminal North and South Albania. Then from the bus terminal, you can get on a bus from Tirana to Saranda. And finally, you can take a bus from Saranda to Ksamil.

There are no direct buses from Tirana airport to Ksamil or nearby Saranda, therefore you would need to take a bus to the Tirana Bus Terminal first. And then once you are at the Tirana Bus Terminal, you can get on a bus to Saranda, which is very close to Ksamil.

From Tirana Airport, there is a bus that drives to the Tirana Bus Terminal North and South Albania. The bus journey from Tirana Airport to the Tirana Bus Terminal only takes 20 minutes.

Step 3: Bus from Saranda to Ksamil

Once you are in Saranda, you can take a bus from Saranda to Ksamil. The bus driver from Tirana to Saranda will have dropped you off near Friendship Park in the city center of Saranda. From Friendship Park, you must walk to SOS Bar where you can get on a bus to Ksamil.

A bus ticket from Saranda to Ksamil costs 150 LEK (1.50 EUR) per person. It is best to have exactly 150 LEK or 200 LEK per person in cash with you. Because an employee will pass through the bus during the bus journey collecting cash from each passenger. 

ATTENTION: In the summer months, the bus from Saranda to Ksamil can be extremely crowded. Of course, Ksamil is a very popular beach destination, which means the bus to Ksamil is often packed with passengers. And the road from Saranda to Ksamil is heavy on traffic, so that slows the bus down. 

Normally, the bus journey from Saranda to Ksamil might take 15-20 minutes, but heavy traffic on the road may make the bus take so much longer. 

The bus from Saranda to Ksamil, makes 4 stops in Ksamil village along the SH81 road before driving onwards to Butrint UNESCO park.

You can take a bus from Tirana to Saranda, however, the bus departs from the Tirana Bus Terminal that is located outside the city center of Tirana. The Tirana Bus Terminal is not within a walking distance of the city center, so you would need to either take a taxi or a city bus to get to the bus terminal. 

The Tirana Bus Terminal North and South Albania is usually a 15-20 minute drive by taxi from the city center of Tirana, depending on traffic of course. Taxi drivers do not offer set rates, because destinations within Tirana city are charged with the taxi meter only. 

If you want to take the city bus, you must go to the central Skanderbeg Square. From Skanderbeg Square, walk to the back of the National History Museum to Rruga Ded Gjo Luli (Deg Gjo Luli Street) and find the bus stop. You must get on a bus to “Instituti”, which stops at the Tirana Bus Terminal North and South Albania.
