  • There is no direct bus from Tirana airport to Ksamil.
  • Option 1: Tirana airport to Ksamil by bus via Vlore and Saranda. Take a bus from Tirana airport to Vlore (12-15 EUR per person), transfer onto a bus from Vlore to Saranda (10 EUR per person) and finally a bus from Saranda to Ksamil (1.50 EUR per person).

  • A rental car in Albania will cost you at least 20-25 euros per day. 
  • However, in July and August, car rental rates are higher due to the tourist season.

Tirana airport to Ksamil by ferry (summary)

  • You cannot travel from Tirana airport to Ksamil by ferry.
  • There are no ferries alongside the Albanian coastline that will bring you to beach destinations.
  • The ferries being offered are ferries from Albania to Italy or Albania to Greece. Popular routes include Durres to Bari, Durres to Ancona and Saranda to Corfu.

Tirana airport to Ksamil by train (summary)

  • You cannot travel from Tirana airport to Ksamil by train. 
  • There are no railways connecting Tirana airport and Ksamil.
  • Currently, the only operational railways are between Durres and Elbasan (2-3 times a week) and Shkoder and Lac (1 time per week). These however are very old fashioned and slow trains, due to a lack of maintenance and investment in train travel.
  • A new railway is under construction that will connect Tirana with Tirana airport and Durres, possibly opening in 2025.

How do I get from Tirana airport to Ksamil by bus?

There is no direct bus from Tirana airport to Ksamil. First, take a bus from Tirana airport to Tirana/Vlore. Second, transfer onto a bus to Saranda. Third, take a bus from Saranda to Ksamil. 

Tirana airport to Ksamil by bus:

  • Option 1: Bus from Tirana Airport to Vlore. Transfer onto a bus from Vlore to Saranda. And finally, a bus from Saranda to Ksamil.
  • Option 2: Bus from Tirana Airport to Bus Terminal Tirana. Transfer onto a bus from Tirana to Saranda. And finally, a bus from Saranda to Ksamil. 

There are direct buses from Tirana airport to destinations like Tirana, Durres, Vlore, Fier and Shkoder. However, there are no direct buses from Tirana airport to Ksamil. And there are no direct buses from Tirana airport to Saranda. Therefore, you must always transfer buses to get from Tirana airport to Ksamil by bus. 

As a result, you can either take a bus from Tirana airport to the bus terminal in Tirana or from Tirana airport to Vlore. When you arrive in Tirana city/Vlore city, you can then transfer onto a bus to Saranda. Saranda is a big coastal town near Ksamil. So once you are in Saranda, you can take a 15-30 minutes bus ride from Saranda to Ksamil. 

Getting from Tirana airport to Ksamil via Vlore and Saranda

Because there is no direct bus from Tirana airport to Ksamil, you could choose to travel via Vlore. 

  • Step 1: Bus Tirana airport to Vlore (2.5 hours)
  • Step 2: Bus Vlore to Saranda (2-3 hours)
  • Step 3: Bus Saranda to Ksamil (15-30 min)

First, you will take a direct bus from Tirana airport to Vlore. Buses from Tirana airport to Vlore depart at 00:45 AM, 03:30 AM, 11:00 AM, 12:30 PM, 14:00, 16:00, 18:00, 20:00 and 22:15. A bus ticket from Tirana airport to Vlore costs 1200-1500 LEK (12-15 EUR) per person. You will pay 1500 LEK (15 EUR), if you take a bus during the night time. You cannot book online. You are expected to pay cash to the bus driver when boarding the bus. Buses from Tirana airport to Vlore are operated by Hermes Airport.

Once you are at the Vlore Bus Terminal, you can get on a bus to Saranda. Buses from Vlore to Saranda depart at 7:00 AM, 8:00 AM, 11:30 AM, 13:00 and 14:30. A bus ticket from Vlore to Saranda costs 1000 LEK (10 EUR) per person. You must pay cash for your bus ticket with the bus driver.

You must take the bus from Saranda via Ksamil to Butrint. A bus ticket from Saranda to Ksamil costs 150 LEK (1.50 EUR) per person. The bus from Saranda to Ksamil departs at 6:30 AM, 7:00 AM, 7:30 AM, 8:00 AM, 8:30 AM, 9:00 AM, 9:30 AM, 10:00 AM, 10:30 AM, 11:00 AM, 11:30 AM, 122:00 PM, 12:30 PM, 13:30, 14:30, 15:30, 16:30, 17:00, 17:30, 18:00, 18:30, 19:00 and 21:30.

Note: The bus from Saranda to Ksamil can be packed with people in the summer months. So you may only be able to stand in the bus and perhaps you won’t be able to board if the bus is full. So you may consider going to the Port of Saranda to get on the bus to Ksamil over there. Because that is where the bus starts and you have a better chance of getting a seat in the bus. 

Taxi drivers may charge you 25-30 euros for a taxi ride from Saranda to Ksamil. As this is a tourist destination and a popular place to visit in the summer season.

Getting from Tirana airport to Ksamil via the bus terminal in Tirana

Because there is no direct bus from Tirana airport to Ksamil, another option is travelling via the Tirana bus terminal.

  • Step 1: Bus/taxi Tirana airport to Tirana bus terminal (20 min)
  • Step 2: Bus Tirana bus terminal to Saranda (5 hours)
  • Step 3: Bus Saranda to Ksamil (15-30 min)

There is a direct bus from Tirana airport to the city centre of Tirana. Officially, this bus does not stop at the Tirana Bus Terminal North and South Albania. However, you can ask the bus driver to drop you off at the Tirana Bus Terminal North and South Albania. If the bus driver agrees, you will save money on a taxi.

The direct bus from Tirana airport to Tirana costs 400 LEK (4 Euros) per person. The bus departs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. So there is a bus departure from Tirana airport to Tirana at 1:00 AM, 2:00 AM, 3:00 AM, 4:00 AM, 5:00 AM, 6:00 AM, 7:00 AM, 8:00 AM, 9:00 AM, 10:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 12:00 PM, 13:00, 14:00, 15:00, 16:00, 17:00, 18:00, 19:00, 20:00, 21:00, 22:00, 23:00 and 24:00.

Once you are at the Tirana Bus Terminal North and South Albania, you can get on a bus to Saranda. Buses from the Tirana Bus Terminal to Saranda depart at 5:30 AM, 7:00 AM, 7:30 AM, 8:30 AM, 9:45 AM, 11:00 AM, 12:30 PM, 14:15, 16:00 and 22:00. 

A bus ticket from Tirana to Saranda costs 1500 LEK (15 Euros) per person. You can buy a bus ticket by cash from the bus driver once you are at the bus terminal. I recommend paying cash, as this is common practice in Albania. Most buses drive via the inland road, via Tepelene, this takes 5 hours. Some buses drive via the coastline, via Himare, this takes 6 hours.

There is no direct bus from Tirana airport to Ksamil. But of course, you can transfer buses. You can travel from Tirana airport to Ksamil via either the Tirana bus terminal or via Vlore. Here are the Tirana airport to Ksamil bus timetables, you can follow.

So it is up to you. You can travel from Tirana airport onwards to the Tirana Bus Terminal or to Vlore. Then transfer onto a bus to Saranda and finally take a bus from Saranda to Ksamil. You may choose to do this in 1 day, if you are arriving at Tirana airport early. Or split this journey over two or more days if you arrive at Tirana airport in the afternoon or evening.

How much is the bus ticket from Tirana airport to Ksamil?

To travel from Tirana airport to Ksamil by bus, you must transfer buses. So the bus ticket price from Tirana airport to Ksamil depends on what route you end up taking. 

Tirana airport to Ksamil bus ticket price (via Vlore/Sarande): 

  •  A bus ticket from Tirana airport to Vlore costs 1200-1500 LEK (12-15 EUR) per person. It is 12 euros during the day time hours and 15 euros during the night hours. 
  • A bus ticket from Vlore to Saranda costs 1000 LEK (10 EUR) per person.
  • A bus ticket from Saranda to Ksamil costs 150 LEK (1.50 EUR) per person.
  • Total bus ticket price: 23.50 – 26.50 EUR

Tirana airport to Ksamil bus ticket price (via Tirana bus terminal/Sarande): 

  • The direct bus from Tirana airport to Tirana costs 400 LEK (4 Euros) per person. Ask the bus driver to drop you off at the Tirana Bus Terminal North and South Albania.

Obviously, these bus ticket prices are a rough indication. Because bus tickets in Albania are not bought online in Albania. Instead, you always pay cash for your bus ticket in Albania with the bus driver. 

Moreover, I would base choosing your route on what time you arrive at Tirana airport and whether you can get on the bus to Vlore or the bus to Tirana directly at that time.

How much is a taxi from Tirana airport to Ksamil?

A taxi from Tirana airport to Ksamil will cost you 210 euros. This is the price of the official Tirana Airport Taxi Service called “Taxi Tirana Airport – by Auto Holiday Albania”. This company has a price list published online, so you can be certain about their taxi rates. 

  • Tirana airport to Ksamil taxi fare – 210 euros for a taxi from Tirana airport to Ksamil.

That being said, it is worth checking with other taxi companies like Green Taxi, Speed Taxi or Merr Taxi via WhatsApp for instance. You may get a slightly discounted rate that is 10-20 euros cheaper. That is just the difference between taxi drivers.

But the price list of the Tirana airport taxi service is overall a good indication of what you might end up paying.

Where can I book a taxi from Tirana airport to Ksamil?

You can book a taxi from Tirana airport to Ksamil via the Tirana airport taxi website or you can book a taxi via WhatsApp with companies like Speed Taxi, Lux Taxi, Green Taxi or Merr Taxi.

UBER Taxis do not exist in Albania. UBER has not launched in Albania. Although some of the taxi companies have created a taxi app, these apps offer regular taxi rates. The same taxi rates that you would get if you were to request a taxi via WhatsApp, email, their website or by phone. So you can just as well use WhatsApp, Messenger or another app you are already using to contact a taxi driver in Albania.

How can I drive from Tirana airport to Ksamil?

You can drive from Tirana airport to Ksamil via the inland route or the coastal road. The inland road is from Tirana airport to Durres, via Fier and Tepelene to Saranda and then to Ksamil. The coastal route is from Tirana airport to Durres, via Vlore and Himare to Saranda and then to Ksamil.

The inland route via Tepelene and Kardhiq Castle is the quickest road from Tirana airport to Ksamil. It may take you 4.5-5 hours depending on traffic.

The coastal route via Vlore and Himare is longer, but offers beautiful views. So you can turn your drive from Tirana airport to Ksamil into a road trip and make stops along the Albanian Riviera for sightseeing. You could stop at Apollonia, Zvernec island, the Llogara Pass, Dhermi Beach, Jale Beach, Himare Beach and the Castle of Ali Pasha in the Bay of Porto Palermo. 

As of 2024, there is a new tunnel under the Llogara Pass. This tunnel will shorten your journey and you will avoid the high Llogara Pass. That being said, driving over the Llogara Pass does offer breathtaking views, so it is still worth considering.

Rental car from Tirana airport to Ksamil

A rental car at Tirana airport will cost you at least 20-25 euros per day for the most basic rental car available. Of course, rental car rates are much higher in July and August due to the tourist season. 

There is a helpful list of car rental companies on the website of Tirana Airport. You can find mobile numbers and email addresses for all the car rental companies at Tirana Airport. I highly recommend that you reach out to several car rental companies at Tirana Airport before you travel to get a good deal. 

To give you an insight into what it would cost to rent a basic rental car, I did reach out to several car rental companies at Tirana Airport.

Tirana Airport car rental prices (starting from): 

  • Albania Airport Rent a Car charges 20 euros per day for a manual Skoda Fabia from 2018.
  • Avis Rent a Car Tirana Airport charges 20 euros per day for a manual Opel Corsa or 25 euros per day for an automatic Opel Corsa. 
  • Pepa Rent a Car Tirana Airport charges 20 euros per day for an economy car, like a Skoda.
  • RCA Rent a Car in Albania Tirana Airport charges 15 euros per day for a small manual car, like a Mitsubishi Spacestar or Citroen C1 or Peugeot 108.
  • Green Motion Rent Car Tirana Airport charges 15 euros per day for the economy category. It can be an Opel Corsa or Dacia Sandero or Skoda Fabia.
  • Viaggia Rent Tirana Airport charges 18 euros per day for a manual Fiat Panda from 2023.
  • ARA Auto Rental Tirana Airport charges 17 euros per day for a small manual car or 20 euros per day for an automatic car. Brands like Citroen or Peugeot are available.
  • G Rentals Tirana Airport charges 20 euros per day for a Dacia Stepway.
  • Sixt Car Rental Tirana Airport charges 15 euros per day for a Mitsubishi Space Star. 

Of course, it is important to bear in mind that car rental rates can be a lot higher in the tourist high season. The summer months like July and August are the top of the high season, so car rental can be a lot pricier. Especially, since the basic or cheap rental car may not be available anymore and only a more luxurious and expensive car is available. 

Do reach out to several car rental companies before you travel. I have spoken to tourists who paid 50-70 euros a day for a rental car. So it is best to do your research before you travel.

IMPORTANT! Driving in Albania can be challenging for a foreigner. The Albanian drivers do have a chaotic and sometimes aggressive style of driving. So if you have any doubts about driving, do not do it! Hire a taxi, book a tour or travel by bus instead. Safety comes first.

Can I take a train from Tirana airport to Ksamil?

You cannot take a train from Tirana airport to Ksamil, because there is no railway connecting Tirana airport and Ksamil. 

In fact, it is not possible to travel by train to Ksamil at all. There are some old railways in Albania that were constructed during the communist period, between the end of the Second World War and 1992. Although visible in the landscape many of these old railways are currently not in use. 

At the moment, train travel within Albania is very limited. There are 2-3 old trains per week in operation between Durres and Elbasan. And there is 1 x old train per week between Shkoder and Lac. 

That being said, there is a new railway under construction between Tirana – Tirana airport – Durres. That railway might be finished in 2025, depending on the progress. However, that new railway will certainly not bring you to Ksamil!

Can I take a ferry from Tirana airport to Ksamil?

You cannot take a ferry from Tirana airport to Ksamil. There are no ferries along the Albanian Riviera coastline that bring you from one beach to another. 

There are ferries from Durres to other countries, like Italy. The most popular route is Durres to Bari in the South of Italy.

And there are ferries from Saranda to Corfu island, which is a Greek island. And of course, you could take a ferry to another destination in Greece. 

But as of right now, there are no ferries that bring you from Tirana airport or nearby Durres to Ksamil/Saranda.

Tirana airport to Ksamil distance

The distance from Tirana airport to Ksamil is 270 kilometres. It will take you around 4.5-5 hours to drive from Tirana airport to Ksamil. 

Note: Google Maps suggests that you can drive from Tirana airport to Ksamil in 3 hours and 52 minutes. I would say this is unrealistic. Considering traffic and the driving distance, this journey will more likely take you 4.5 hours or 5 hours.

How do I get to Ksamil from Tirana?

You can get to Ksamil from Tirana by bus (transfer in Saranda), by taxi or by car. There is no direct bus from Tirana to Ksamil. So you must take a bus from Tirana to Saranda and then another bus from Saranda to Ksamil. A taxi to Ksamil from Tirana will cost you around 210-220 euros.

There is no direct bus from Tirana to Ksamil, so I will share the bus timetables from Tirana to Saranda and Saranda to Ksamil. Because you must transfer buses in Saranda to get to Ksamil.

How much is the bus ticket from Tirana to Ksamil?

A bus ticket from Tirana to Ksamil will cost you 16.50 euros in total. You will be taking two buses. First, a bus from Tirana to Saranda, which costs 15 euros per person. And then a bus from Saranda to Ksamil which costs 1.50 euros per person. So total 16.50 euros.

How much is a taxi from Tirana to Ksamil?

A taxi from Tirana to Ksamil will cost you 210-220 euros. The Tirana Airport Taxi Service charges 210 euros for a taxi from Tirana airport to Ksamil, but the city centre centre of Tirana is slightly further from Ksamil. Merr Taxi Tirana charges 220 euros for a taxi from Tirana to Saranda, which is very close to Ksamil. So you will end up paying around 210-220 euros. Of course, individual taxi drivers may offer you a rate slightly above or below that range.

Can I get from Tirana to Ksamil by ferry?

You cannot get from Tirana to Ksamil by ferry. A ferry from Tirana to Ksamil does not exist. 

Tirana is an inland city, but the nearest port is the Port of Durres at a 45 minute drive from Tirana. However, from Durres, there are no ferries that go along the Albanian coastline. From Durres, there are ferries to Italy and other countries.

You can drive from Tirana to Ksamil via either the inland road or the coastal route. Usually buses drive from Tirana via Durres, Fier, Tepelene and Saranda to Ksamil. This inland route is the quickest route to Ksamil. It may take you 5.5 hours to drive from Tirana to Ksamil via the inland route.

However, the coastal road along the Albanian Riviera is very beautiful. So if you have time and you want to take the touristic route with beautiful coastal views, then it is worth taking the longer route along the coastline. Drive from Tirana via Durres, Fier, Vlore, Himare and Saranda to Ksamil. This route may take you a full day, if you make some stops for lunch, pictures and a bit of sightseeing.
