There is no direct bus from Tirana airport to Himare, therefore, you will need to transfer buses. To get from Tirana airport to Himare by bus, you have two options:
- Option 1: Bus from Tirana airport to Vlore + Bus from Vlore to Himare
- Option 2: Taxi from Tirana airport to the Bus Terminal in Tirana + Bus from the bus terminal to Himare.

Step 1: Bus from Tirana airport to Vlore
There are direct buses from Tirana airport to Vlore. The bus from Tirana airport to Vlore departs at 00:45 AM, 3:30 AM, 11:00 AM, 12:30 PM, 14:00, 16:00, 18:00, 20:00 and 22:15.
A bus ticket from Tirana airport to Vlore will cost you 1200-1500 Leke (12-15 euros) per person. Buses during the day time hours cost 1200 Leke (12 euros) and buses during the night hours cost 1500 Leke (15 euros).
You cannot book your bus ticket online in advance. You can only pay for your bus ticket in cash with the bus driver. So when you arrive at Tirana airport, you must simply walk to the parking area, where buses stop and buy your bus ticket from the bus driver upon his arrival.
The bus journey from Tirana airport to Vlore takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes. Buses from Tirana airport to Vlore are operated by Hermes Aeroport in Vlore. The bus driver will drop you off at the Hermes Aeroport office in Vlore.
Once you have arrived in Vlore, you can now transfer onto a bus to Himare.

A bus ticket from Vlore to Himare costs 500 Leke (5 euros) per person. You cannot book your bus ticket online in advance. You can only pay cash for your bus ticket with the bus driver. Bus drivers in Albania will accept Albanian Leke cash or Euros cash (notes, no coins).

Option 2: Bus from Tirana airport via Tirana Bus Terminal to Himare
The other option is taking a bus or taxi from Tirana airport to the Tirana Bus Terminal and then getting on a bus to Himare. Although, there are no direct buses from Tirana airport to Himare, there are direct buses from the Bus Terminal in Tirana to Himare. So you would simply need to take a taxi or bus to get to the Bus Terminal in Tirana, where you can then get on the bus to Himare.

There are no direct buses from Tirana airport to Himare. So if you want to catch a bus to Himare, you must go to the Tirana Bus Terminal North and South Albania.

To get to the Tirana Bus Terminal North and South Albania, you can either take a bus or a taxi. A taxi from Tirana Airport to the Bus Terminal North and South Albania will cost you approximately 22-28 euros.
There is a bus from Tirana airport to the centre of Tirana that passes by the North and South Bus Terminal. So what you can do is go to the bus driver and ask him to drop you off at the North and South Bus Terminal. If the bus driver agrees, that bus journey will cost you 400 Leke (4 euros) per person.
Buses from Tirana airport (via the bus terminal) to the city centre of Tirana depart every hour, on the hour e.g. 7:00, 8:00 etc, and operate 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. Buses are operated by Luna Travel, you can buy a bus ticket online or you can simply pay for your bus ticket in cash with the bus driver. Which is probably the better option, since you need to ask the bus driver to drop you at the Bus Terminal North and South Albania anyway.

Step 2: Bus from Tirana Bus Terminal to Himare
Once you get to the Tirana Bus Terminal North and South Albania, you can get on a bus from the Tirana bus terminal to Himare.
Buses from Tirana to Himare depart at 5:30 AM, 7:00 AM, 7:30 AM, 9:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 13:00, 15:30 and 18:00. Some of these buses are direct buses from Tirana to Himare. Other buses are buses from Tirana via the coastline including Himare to Saranda.
Important! Not all buses from Tirana to Saranda drive via the coastline. The majority of buses from Tirana to Saranda drive via the inland road and Tepelene. So these inland buses do not pass by Himare and won’t be able to drop you off in Himare. So always check with the bus driver, if he will drive via Himare or not.
A bus ticket from Tirana to Himare will cost you between 12 and 15 euros per person. You will need to pay cash for your bus ticket with the bus driver.
If possible I always recommend you get to the bus terminal as early as possible, for your best chance of finding the right bus and securing a seat on the bus to Himare.

The Himare bus station is alongside the main coastline road connecting Vlore, Himare and Saranda. This coastline road is called the “SH8”. Upon arrival the bus driver will drop you off along the main road in Himare, this is common practice in Albania.

You can get from Tirana airport to Himare by taxi. A taxi from Tirana airport to Himare will cost you between 170-185 euros per taxi. Obviously, prices between taxi drivers vary slightly. However, these prices are based on taxi prices lists published online by the Tirana Airport Taxi Service and Merr Taxi Tirana.

Of course, it is important to bear in mind that car rental rates can be a lot higher in the tourist high season. The summer months like July and August are the top of the high season, so car rental can be a lot pricier. Especially, since the basic or cheap rental car may not be available anymore and only a more luxurious and expensive car is available.
Do reach out to several car rental companies before you travel. I have spoken to tourists who paid 50-70 euros a day for a rental car. So it is best to do your research before you travel.
IMPORTANT! Driving in Albania can be challenging for a foreigner. The Albanian drivers do have a chaotic and sometimes aggressive style of driving. So if you have any doubts about driving, do not do it! Hire a taxi, book a tour or travel by bus instead. Safety comes first.
Can I get from Tirana airport to Himare by train?
You cannot get from Tirana airport to Himare by train. There is no railway between Tirana airport and Himare, so train travel is impossible. Actually, there is no railway to Himare at all, so you can only reach Himare by bus, by taxi or by car via the road.
Train travel within Albania is very limited. As of right now, there are 2-3 trains per week between Elbasan and Durres. And there is 1 x train per week between Shkoder and Lac. Those are all the trains in operation in the entire country.
In 2024, railway construction for a railway connecting Durres, Tirana Airport and Tirana was started. It is possible that in 2025, there will be trains between Durres, Tirana Airport and Tirana, if the railway is finished in time.
This is the first major investment in the railway network since the fall of communism in Albania in 1992. In the communist period, there were railways and trains between Shkoder, Durres, Tirana, Elbasan, Pogradec and Vlore. Although these old railways remain visible in the landscape, many of these railways are not currently in use and in need of refurbishment.

The easiest way to reserve a taxi in Albania is contacting taxi drivers via WhatsApp. You will usually have several taxi rates within minutes of requesting a quote.
How long does it take to drive from Tirana to Himare?
It takes approximately 4-5 hours to drive from Tirana to Himare. At first you will drive from Tirana in the direction of Durres towards Vlore. This section of road from Tirana via Durres towards Vlore will take you around 2.5 hours depending on traffic.
Once you get to Vlore, you have a choice. You can either take the quicker Llogara Tunnel underneath the Llogara Pass, which will make your journey 40 minutes shorter. Or you can take the longer road over the Llogara Pass which takes 40 minutes longer, but offers beautiful views from the 1027 metre high pass towards the coastline.
At the time of writing this blog post in September 2024, the Llogara Tunnel was free of charge. There was however discussion over the Llogara Tunnel becoming chargeable in 2025.

Traffic and driving along the coastal road that turns and twists along the coastline will slow your driving speed down.

Himare is worth visiting, if you prefer staying in a beach village rather than a big coastal city. The Albanian Riviera coastline starts at Vlore city and extends along the coastline towards Saranda/Ksamil in the South.
The most popular places to stay along the Albanian Riviera are Vlore and Saranda. However, Vlore and Saranda are both big coastal cities with many facilities like apartments, hotels, restaurants and shops alongside the coastline.
If you prefer more of a beach setting, rather than a large coastal town, you may really like Himare. Himare is surrounded by many different beaches and villages that you could check out by taxi or car during your stay.
